You can create a home-strengthening program using nothing but dumbbells and/or kettlebells.  But there are subtle choices within these categories.  Let me see if I can help clarify these differences for you.

Under the category of dumbbells, BGI Fitness offers three levels of equipment.  The first one is perfect for the beginner – the other two can also handle a beginner, but can also challenge the most advanced athlete.

1.    Troy VTX Vinyl Dumbbells are vinyl–coated dumbbells that are brightly color-coded for easy weight identification.  These are perfect for the beginner, as they run from 1 lb. to 15 lbs..  These should not rust, crack or fade under normal conditions.

2.    Troy VTX Dumbbells still come in a smaller weight (3 lb.) but go as high as 100 lbs..  In the range of 15-100 pounds, these come in 5 lb. increments.  These all metal dumbbells are chip, abrasion and corrosion resistant.

3.    Troy VTX 8 Side Rubbr Dumbbells offer the same weight options as the above VTX Dumbbells, but the rubber encasing helps to protect the floor and reduce noise.

KettlebellsA similar yet totally different strengthening tool is the kettlebell, which can be used together with dumbbells or in lieu of them.  A legendary Russian exercise device, the kettlebell has long been a favorite for those seeking a special edge in strength and endurance. Unlike traditional dumbbell weights, kettlebells are dynamic.  They involve total body explosive moves that are core-based.  Strength and cardio are developed at the same time.  

Because kettlebells are dynamic, good technique is imperative.  Be a perfectionist and pay attention to small details.  To see some examples of kettlebell exercises, from the website are the steps to 10 basic kettlebell moves.

Once you have run through these moves, then try to put it all together in a seamless 30 minute workout.  Jillian Michaels of The Greatest Loser fame has an outstanding video workout which I challenge you to try.  Pay attention to the beginner and advanced moves illustrated throughout.
