Turning fifty years old was not something that I was looking forward to last April. In fact, as the months leading up to my birthday sped by last winter, I found myself becoming anxious about the whole idea of hitting the half-century mark.
Some of my riding partners had already hit the milestone the previous year. They had celebrated in various ways of which I had participated. As I contemplated how I would spend my 50th, I knew I wanted to spend it with my cycling friends and on my bike. We set aside the date and the only information I gave my three close friends was to be prepared to ride 50 miles in recognition of my 50th birthday.
After a long winter and a chilly spring, the special day in April arrived with perfect weather for a ride. Unbeknownst to my friends, I had plotted a course complete with my own special Dan Henrys to guide us on our way. I had recruited a small army of people to secure a secret SAG stop, to take birthday photos, and to cater a unique luncheon at the 33 mile marker. My friends were overcome with joy at these surprises. Witnessing their joy was a blessing to me tenfold as I rejoiced in the miles we had shared on our bikes and the friendships we hold so dear thru time.
Turning 50 turned out to be one of the best days of my life. Next year we plan to ride 51 miles for my birthday as a new tradition was created with friends I’ll keep for a lifetime
