Whether you are running or biking, you can just feel that fall is here. The crunch of leaves underfoot and the coolness to the air – it makes for beautiful training runs and rides. But this change of season portends colder weather to come. Are you one of the hearty breed who will continue to train outdoors through it all? If so, kudos to you! But for those who plan to transition indoors, now is the time to start planning.
Joining a gym can provide access to a great variety of equipment, keeping your training varied and interesting. However, getting to the gym can prove challenging with our busy schedules. It is for this reason that many of us opt to bring the gym to our home. But what would be the best piece out there?
Walkers and runners may initially consider a treadmill, as these allow you to continue your activity of choice indoors. This is a great time to shop for these, as both Precor and Vision Fitness released brand-new consoles and programs just this fall.
Since running is such a high-impact activity, I do encourage runners to consider a non-impact cross-training alternative for the winter months. Elliptical Trainers have come closest to simulating your running experience while offering a much needed rest for your legs. Their moving arms also train your arms – an often neglected area in runners. Again, Precor and Vision just released all new consoles and programs for their ellipticals.

Bicyclists, you also have numerous options for bringing your cycling indoors. If you love the fit and feel of your road bike, then bring it indoors and attach it to a CycleOps Trainer. Shift your gears just like on the road and ride in comfort!
A second option is to leave your road bike in the garage and bring in a dedicated piece of indoor equipment – such as an indoor cycle. With 4 different adjustments of saddle and handlebars, you can re-create the fit of your outdoor bicycle. CycleOps and LeMond both offer excellent choices.
And like I suggested to runners, you might wish to consider a cross-training alternative for the winter months. Many cyclists find that rowing machines are a great complement to their cycling – powering up the glutes and quad muscles (which translate into a more powerful cyclist).
