Since I moved to Indianapolis in 2000, I've heard about this Thing; The Hilly Hundred Weekend. As my interest in road biking grew I knew I wanted to participate in the Hilly but it seemed like something always came up that same October weekend year after year. Finally, I registered and committed to ride in the 2012 event, but was only able to do the Saturday portion. This year, I registered early fully intending to ride both days. Of course something always comes up that same busy weekend in October!

On Saturday, I woke up to a cold and rainy day, a little grateful I wouldn't be able to start riding until later in the day after I fulfilled some work responsibilities. The rain stopped at noon. I left work in Indy at 1pm and by 2:30 I was seated on my bike starting out at Edgewood High School as literally the very last rider to begin. I rode about 20 miles alone, snapping pictures and trying to determine if I could finish all 57 miles before sunset. I had assumed all the SAG stops would be closed so I brought my own food and water, but it wasn't enough. Luckily I caught up with some other late-comers so we shared nutrition and decided we could in fact finish the ride. We rode the next 37 miles together and rolled back into Elletsville just before it got dark.

On Sunday I again had some work responsibilities to take care of but was still determined to ride and finish those last 43 miles. I did end up getting an earlier start so I enjoyed the good food and entertainment at the SAG stops. It was a beautiful weekend and my first time riding such long distances on back to back days. I'm glad I have made the Hilly a priority while balancing other things in my life. Hobbies should be priorities and they add so much to my life.

The picture I am submitting was taken about 2 hours after rainfall while the rain clouds were giving way to sunlight. To me, this picture is quintessential INDIANA. It's a lovely place to live.
