This spring I became the proud owner of my first road bike thanks to my parents and the folks at Bicycle Garage Indy getting me set up from afar. You see, I moved to New Jersey about a year ago to pursue a post-doctoral fellowship. Being an Indiana native my whole life, it took me quite a while to adjust to the move. When my bike arrived, it changed my view of the NJ area and landscape. I’ve found a new love being out on the road. This new found freedom led to an opportunity to participate in the Warren County Fair Balloon and Bike Charity Race. Each rider is paired with a balloon pilot. You "help" your pilot inflate the hot air balloon, bungey your bikes to the basket and climb in. You and you’re pilot have to fly for at least 45 minutes or to a marked boarder, they land the balloon and you take off back to the fairgrounds (towards the finish line) on your bike. It just so happened one balloonist had a basket large enough and was able to take two bike riders. My mom, Christy, made last minute travel plans and headed out to NJ to participate with me. I’m lucky to have such a great friend in my mom and we’ve done so many fun things together, but this by far was one of the best experiences I’ve had with her. We didn’t win, but I didn’t care (I hope the balloonist didn’t mind). My mom and I had a blast and giggled from the time the balloon lifted off until we crossed the finish line – together.
