This summer is the 6th time since 1974 I have ridden northwest Michigan’s M-119, the Tunnel of Trees. It is roughly 35 miles of curving. single-lane "highway" hugging the shoreline and bluffs above Little Traverse Bay and Lake Michigan. Along with the opposite shore of the bay, you eventually have Beaver Island on the horizon, when you are not riding up, down and around the dunes above the shore. The source of the name is obvious has the surrounding forests enclose the narrow road. It was a little easier as a 17-year-old, however it remains one of my favorite stretches of road, and one of the reasons I love to bike.
The route is a popular part of 4 and 5 day Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinac (DALMAC) Tour, held every Labor Day weekend since 1972.
