I’m not so sure this is properly defined as a mishap, but it almost destroyed a lifelong dream.

In 1994 I had a son. Like a lot of fathers I couldn’t wait to start doing the things I like with him. Most importantly..Mt. Biking here in Brown County.

The problem was I didn’t take into account his young age and the reality that kids have lots of short burst energy and not a ton of stamina.

Our first trip when he was (finally) about 11 was on the great new Mt. Bike trails in Brown County State Park and we both quickly blasted out to the far ends of the park in about 90 minutes.

Although he’s smiling in this picture, the trip home wasn’t as pleasant as the trip out. I had totally failed to bring even so much as a pop-tart. It took close to three hours to get back with a lot of misery on poor guy.

I almost ruined him from ever wanting go go biking again. Important lesson for me. Don’t rush them. :-)
