We sell bikes at Bicycle Garage Indy, and we know they help people enjoy their lives, but we don’t often learn of or think about the impact a refurbished bicycle received through our Shifting Gears program can make on someone’s life. I recently got an email from one of the agencies we have provided bikes to.

"The bikes you donate to me have been so helpful to my clients. My client are homeless veterans and living in transitional housing. They are trying to get back on their feet and get their lives back on track. Most of the time they get jobs where the bus line doesn’t reach and having a bike gets them to their jobs. The bike also helps to get them in shape physically. Every time I tell a client I can help them get a bike their face lights up and they are so grateful.

I had a client who was having trouble getting to his job in Plainfield so I requested a bike for him through your agency, "
Shifting Gears" and he was so thankful. He called me and thanked me for requesting the bike for him. He explained that he was starting to get depressed because he was offered the job, but couldn’t get there and now he can.

I thank you so much for the development of this great resource. It has definitely been a lifesaver for my clients that are in need for transportation. I will continue to utilize your program. Everyone I have spoken to at your agency has been so helpful and polite and the bikes always get here quickly and in such good condition. Keep up the good work!"

Shifting Gears is a partnership between Bicycle Garage Indy, Volunteers of America of Indiana and the Indiana Department of Correction. Bicycle Garage Indy accepts donations of bicycles, bicycle parts and cash to provide tools and replacement parts at both BGI locations on behalf of Volunteers of America of Indiana. Donated bikes are refurbished by offenders at Pendleton Correctional facility and given to non-profit agencies who work with those in need.
